Philadelphia – die Stadt der brüderlichen Liebe, irgendwas mit Frischkäse und den Spitznamen „Philly“ kannte ich schon vor meiner Reise dorthin. Dass die Stadt aber so wahnsinnig viel Geschichte und Charme zu bieten hat, wusste ich vorher noch nicht. In Philadelphia wurde 1776 die amerikanische Unabhängigkeit verkündet, Benjamin Franklin hatte dort seine Druckerei und war maßgeblich an der Unabhängigkeit der USA beteiligt. Mit 1,6 Millionen Einwohnern ist Philadelphia die sechstgrößte Stadt der USA – so viel dazu. Trotzdem ist Philadelphia eine Stadt, in der man viel zu Fuß entdecken kann. Gerade rund um die Independence Hall und in den Straßen der Innenstadt rund um das Rathaus kann man gut zu Fuß gehen. Wer sich zu den Treppenstufen aufmachen möchte, die Rocky im Film hochläuft – der muss doch ein wenig mehr marschieren. Die meisten sind in Philly aber sowieso auf dem Rennrad unterwegs – so richtige Hipster eben.
Philadelphia – the city of brotherly love, something with cream cheese and the nickname „Philly“ – that was what I already knew before my trip there. But I didn’t know before that the city had so much history and charm to offer. In 1776 the American independence was proclaimed in Philadelphia, Benjamin Franklin had his printing works there and was decisively involved in the independence of the USA. With 1.6 million inhabitants Philadelphia is the sixth largest city of the USA. Nevertheless, Philadelphia is a city where you can discover a lot on foot. Especially around the Independence Hall and in the streets of the city centre around the city hall, you can walk well. If you want to go to the stairs Rocky runs up in the movie – you have to march a little more. But most of the people in Philly ride their racing bikes around the city anyway – just like real hipsters.
City Hall
Im Zentrum der Stadt liegt das imponierende Rathaus von Philadelphia. So groß, dass es nicht gerade leicht fällt, ein Foto davon zu machen. Rund herum finden häufig kleine Festivals statt. Vom Rathaus aus kann man in alle Richtungen zu den unterschiedlichen Sehenswürdigkeiten laufen oder mit der Metro fahren.
The impressive Philadelphia City Hall is located in the center of the city. IThis building is so big that it is not easy to take a picture of it. Around it, there are often small festivals. From the city hall you can walk in all directions to the different sights or take the metro.
Independence Hall
Wer dort hinein möchte, muss früh dran sein. Es gibt nur eine limitierte Anzahl an Tickets pro Tag. Wer davor steht hat außerdem die berühmte Liberty Bell im Rücken. Tipp: wer die Liberty Bell sehen möchte muss nicht den Eintritt ins Museum zahlen, man kann einfach um das Gebäude herumgehen und dort durch die Scheibe einen Blick auf die (eigentlich ziemlich kleine) Glocke werfen.
If you want to go in there, you have to be there quite early. There is only a limited number of tickets per day. Those who stand in front of it also have the famous Liberty Bell in their back. Tip: to see the Liberty Bell you do not have to pay the entrance fee to the museum, you can simply walk around the building and have a look at the (actually quite small) bell through the window.
Die erste Bank Amerikas – The first bank of the US
Das ist sie, die älteste Bank Amerikas, die 1791 gebaut wurde. Wenige Meter entfernt steht dann auch die zweite Bank Amerikas. Rund herum liegen viele historische Gebäude. Für jeden Kultur-Interessierten ein Muss.
This is the oldest bank in America, built in 1791. A few meters away is America’s second bank. There are many historic buildings all around. A must for anyone interested in culture.

Wer sich kulinarisch mal so richtig austoben möchte ist im Reading Teminal market genau richtig. Von Fisch über Burger bis hin zu Bagels und Donuts, Kaffee und Kuchen – alles ist mit dabei. Viele Restaurants und einige Stände mit frischen Lebensmitteln.

Unser AirBnb in Philadelphia war das beste der ganzen Reise. Wir waren nur zwei Nächte dort, haben uns aber schnell so richtig wohlgefühlt. Die Wohnung war wunderschön eingerichtet und die Gastgeber super nett. Auch die Wohngegend war genau richtig – mit vielen netten Häusern, Cafés und Restaurants. Und alles locker zu Fuß zu erreichen.
Our AirBnb in Philadelphia was the best of the whole trip. We only spent two nights there, but quickly felt really comfortable. The apartment was beautifully furnished and the hosts were super nice. Also the area was just right – with many cute houses, cafés and restaurants. And everything is within easy walking distance.
