Brussels Travel Guide

Brüssel ist die Hauptstadt von Belgien und gleichzeitig die Hauptstadt von Europa. Brüssel besteht aus vielen verschiedenen Stadtteilen, die auch meistens einen besonderen Charakter haben. Meistens leben dort besonders viele Menschen einer Herkunft. Im Zentrum der Stadt liegt der Grand Place, der vermutlich jedem, der ihn zum ersten Mal betritt den Atem wegbleiben lässt. Brüssel ist unheimlich international und hat für jeden etwas zu bieten. Ich habe mein Auslandssemester in Brüssel verbracht und die Stadt als jemand kennengelernt, der dort lebt und jeden Tag seinem Alltag nachgeht. Aber ich war natürlich auch der Guide für meine Freunde und Familie, wenn sie mich dort besucht haben. Deshalb kenne ich die wichtigsten Touristen-Spots und auch ein paar weniger bekannte Ecken. Natürlich gibt es dort das EU-Parlament. Von außen ist es aber nicht besonders spannend. Aber direkt daneben gibt es ein kostenloses Museum über die EU und das Parlament.

Brussels is the capital of Belgium and at the same time the capital of Europe. The city consists of many different neighborhoods, most of which have a special character. Most of the time many people of the same origin live there. In the centre of the city lies the Grand Place, which will probably keep everyone who comes to it for the first time breathless. Brussels is incredibly international and has something in store for everyone. I spent my semester abroad in Brussels and got to know the city as someone who lives there and spends his everyday lif there. But of course I was also the guide for my friends and family when they visited me there. Therefore I know the most important tourist spots and also some less known corners. Of course there is the EU Parliament. From the outside, however, it is not particularly exciting. But right next to it there is a free museum on the EU and Parliament.

Das Atomium:

Es liegt am Rande von Brüssel, ist aber mit der Metro leicht zu erreichen. Mit der Linie 6 komt man direkt bis zum Fuße des Atomiums. Im Atomium sind Ausstellungen zu sehen und wer den Eintritt nicht bezahlen möchte kann sich das 102 Meter hohe Bauwerk auch einfach von außen anschauen. Es wurde für die Expo 1958 erbaut und soll für das Atomzeitalter und die friedliche Nutzung von Kernenergie stehen. Es ist wirklich riesig und definitiv sehenswert.

It is located on the outside of Brussels, but is easy to reach by metro. Line 6 takes you directly to the foot of the Atomium. Exhibitions can be seen in the Atomium and if you don’t want to pay the entrance fee you can also take a look at the 102 meter high building from the outside. It was built for the 1958 Expo and is supposed to stand for the nuclear age and the peaceful use of nuclear energy. It’s really huge and definitely worth seeing.

Stillgelegte Verkehrsstraße:

Mitten durch Brüssel führte früher eine stark befahrene Straße, der Boulevard Anspach. Die wurde einfach mal stillgelegt und soll eine Art Fußgängerzone sein. Als ich dort war (2015) war dort besonders beim Weihnachtsmarkt viel los (auf dem Place de la Bourse). Dort rund herum gibt es viele Restaurants und nette Cafés. Mein absolutes Lieblingscafé war das Peck 47, direkt um die Ecke von der Bourse. Dort gibt es Kuchen, Säfte und Smoothies, außerdem Brunch. Es liegt in der Rue du Marché aux Poulets 47, was wohl auch den Namen erklären dürfte.

A busy road, Boulevard Anspach, used to run right through Brussels. It was simply shut down and is supposed to be a kind of pedestrian zone. When I was there (2015) there was a lot going on especially at the Christmas market (on the Place de la Bourse). There are many restaurants and nice cafés around. My absolute favourite café was the Peck 47, just around the corner from the Bourse. There are cakes, juices and smoothies, as well as brunch. It is located at 47 Rue du Marché aux Poulets, which should explain its name.

Der Grand Place:

…wird am Abend gerne in goldenes Sonnenlicht getaucht. Die mit Gold verzierten Häuser umrahmen den Platz, der im Frühling mit Blumen geshmückt wird und im Winter mit einem bunten Lichtspiel glänzen kann. Jeden Abend werden die Häuser rund herum beleuchtet und das sieht wirklich atemberaubend aus. Auf dem Platz kann man sich aufhalten, in eines der ziemlich teuren Restaurants gehen oder einfach drüberschlendern.

…is often immersed in golden sunlight in the evening. The houses decorated with gold frame the square, which is decorated with flowers in spring and shines with a colourful play of light in winter. Every evening the houses are illuminated all around and that looks really breathtaking. You can stay on the square, go to one of the rather expensive restaurants or simply stroll over it.

Der Mont des Arts:

Direkt zwischen dem Königspalast (kann man sich auch mal anschauen aber nicht viel sehen außer die Außenfassade und dem Parc Royale) und dem Justizpalast liegt der Mont des Arts. Dort liegen viele Museen und der Blick auf den Turm des Grand Place ist frei. Von dort hat man einen schönen Blick über die Stadt. Dort findet man das Königliche Museum der Schönen Künste, die Königliche Bibliothek Belgiens, das Musikinstrumentenmuseum, das Museum Belvue, das Museum der Belgischen Nationalbank sowie das Generalstaatsarchiv und das Königlich Belgische Filmarchiv.

The Mont des Arts is located directly between the Royal Palace (you can also take a look at it but you can’t see much except the exterior façade and the Parc Royale) and the Palace of Justice. There are many museums and the view of the tower of the Grand Place is open. From there you have a nice view over the city. There you’ll find the Royal Museum of Fine Arts, the Royal Library of Belgium, the Museum of Musical Instruments, the Museum Belvue, the Museum of the National Bank of Belgium, the General State Archives and the Royal Belgian Film Archive.

Food & Drinks:

Das meiner Meinung nach beste Café habe ich bereits genannt, das Peck 47. Restaurants gibt es in Brüssel wie Sand am Meer. Meine Epfehlung ist hier eindeutig: abseits der Touristen-Spots suchen. Brüssels Gastronomie ist teuer aber wenn man etwas sucht, wird man auch fündig. Le Cercle des Voyageurs hat mich aber wirklich beeindruckt, besonders das Ambiente dort und die Getränke. Essen gibt es dort aber auch.

Eine guten Snack auf die Hand findet man ebenfalls in den Seitenstraßen – Sandwiches & natürlich die berühmten Belgischen Waffeln. Die Waffeln sind von einem Euro an zu haben und können mit Früchten, Schokolade und Sahne getoppt werden. Eine Waffel macht echt satt.

Bier: Die Belgier sagen von sich, sie hätten das beste Bier. Ich als Deutsche kann das natürlich nicht ganz so hinnehmen. Aber das Bier ist auf jeden Fall gut, so viel von mir als jemand, der eigentlich nie Bier trinkt.

Essen einkaufen kann man entweder bei Delhaize oder bei Carrefour. Die Supermärkte haben sogar sonntags geöffnet. Richtig toll ist der Markt am Sonntag Marché du Midi (am Gare du Midi) wo es günstig Obst und Gemüse und noch viel mehr gibt. Unverpackte Lebensmittel und frisches Obst und Gemüse findet man beim Marché Bio des Tanneurs .

I have already mentioned what I think is the best café, the Peck 47. There are as many restaurants in Brussels like sand by the sea. My recommendation here is clear: search away from the tourist spots. Brussels gastronomy is expensive but if you are looking for something, you will find it. But Le Cercle des Voyageurs really impressed me, especially the ambience there and the drinks. There’s food there, too.

A good snack on the hand can also be found in the side streets – sandwiches & of course the famous Belgian waffles. The waffles are available from one euro and can be topped with fruits, chocolate and cream. One waffle really fills you up.

Beer: Belgians say of themselves that they have the best beer. Of course, as a German, I can’t accept it that way. But the beer is definitely good, so much of me as someone who never actually drinks beer.

You can go food shopping at Delhaize or at Carrefour. Some are also open on sundays. The market on Sundays Marché du Midi (at the Gare du Midi) is really great where you can buy cheap fruit and vegetables and much more. Unpackaged food and fresh fruit and vegetables can be found at the Marché Bio des Tanneurs.

Hotel:

Hotels gibt es natürlich auch einige in Brüssel und das auch in alles Preisklassen. Das Bloom Hotel kann ich empfehlen. Die Zimmer sind richtig schön und dort gibt es ein richtig ausgiebiges, leckeres Frühstück. Für Sparfüchse kann ich die Jugendherberge in Molenbeek (nicht unbedingt das Viertel an sich, aber die Jugenherberge ist schön).

Of course, there are also hotels in Brussels in all price categories. I can recommend the Bloom Hotel. The rooms are really nice and there is a really extensive, tasty breakfast. I can recommend the youth hostel in Molenbeek (not necessarily the neighborhood itself, but the youth hostel is nice).
